I’m fascinated by the technique of embossing with ink, embossing powder, and a heat tool. There’s just something magical about watching videos of the powder melting into a smooth, raised design, sometimes shining, sometimes sparkling, depending on what type of powder is used. As a new crafter I haven’t yet made the investment in those supplies (can anyone recommend a good heat gun?) so I’ve been playing around with other ways to add texture to a project.

I really like making index card art for several reasons. The small work area is very manageable, I don’t waste large amounts of supplies as I’m learning a new technique, and they are easy to store and display.

This is a project that I created by spraying Tim Holtz Distress Spray on a craft mat and smooshing the index card around in it. Then I added some stamping with a BoBunny script stamp on one card and some small line art butterflies on the other, along with some torn paper from the Tim Holtz tissue roll and two larger text stamps (Faith and Believe) done with black Memento ink.

My final idea before adding the printed out verse glued to card stock was to stamp the butterflies using craft glue tinted with Distress Spray. I just poured the glue in a little puddle on the mat, sprayed it, and stirred it together before dipping the stamp into it. This leaves a beautiful raised impression, dries fairly quickly, and wipes right off the stamp. Note that you don’t get the same perfect image you get when you use heat embossing.
