Index Card A Day 2019 Challenge

Today is the first day of the 2019 Index-Card-A-Day (ICAD) Challenge created and sponsored by Daisy Yellow! I’ve heard of the challenge, and I create a lot of index card art already, but I’ve never committed to participating until this year.

My goal for the ICAD Challenge is to just create freely and experiment with different materials and techniques without worrying about how good (or bad) the results are. I know I’m much to cautious with my art, so this is an opportunity to just play with my supplies and have fun with the process.

Index cards ready!

Daisy Yellow is making ICAD prompts available each week, but they’re completely optional. I’m thinking that if I get stuck creatively, I’ll use one of the prompts. Otherwise, I intend to just go with the flow and let my mood each day dictate the art! Here’s today’s card:

Happy summer!

I created the background with Tim Holtz Distress Ink Sprays in Twisted Citron and Mermaid Lagoon. I spritzed them on my craft mat and then diluted them slightly with a mini mister.

I used two squirts of each color.

I smooshed the index card around in the ink until the entire background was covered with green at the bottom and blue at the top. The more water you use, the more of a watercolor effect you get on the paper.

Be prepared for inky fingers when you’re done with this step!

Next I drew my flowers with a black Posca pen. I love using these paint pens, but I’m a complete beginner with doodling. Luckily the goal of the ICAD Challenge is to just have fun and not worry about perfection!

My composition is a little off balance, but that’s okay!

The fun part is adding the color and the designs with the Posca pens! I use the extra fine line for this kind of drawing!

My favorite part is adding the white highlights!

Finally I inked the edges with Memento Ink in Tuxedo Black. This just gives the card a “finished” look.

I wish I had left a little more room to draw a squiggly border around the card. Oh well.

And that’s it for today’s card! Have you ever participated in the ICAD Challenge? Are you going to participate this year? Let me know in the comments!

Blessings,
~Happy Heart Art Girl
